Five Ways to Save Money on Woodturning Supplies

Woodturning is a fun, practical hobby, but any woodturner can tell you that it’s possible to get out of control while shopping! It isn’t easy to turn away from specialty pen blanks, new wood lathe tools and interesting project and pen kits. However, there are a few ways that you can maximize your dollar when shopping for supplies. At William Wood-Write we try our best to provide the most bang for your buck, so you can focus on turning and maybe selling or gifting your finished products.

1. Woodturning bundles and sets

Buying in bulk is a well-known way to cut down on costs. Our bundles include different platings of the same pen or project kit, assortments of acrylic or poly blanks in themed colours and mixed exotic wood at a reduced price. We also offer most of our wood pen blanks in packs of five or ten at a discount for when it’s time to stock up. We even carry 50-packs of soft maple, sugar maple and cocobolo if you’re feeling really industrious. In addition, if you are considering trying something new, we have project-specific starter kits with everything you need to begin.

2. Woodturner’s starter kits and gift boxes

Starter kits aren’t just for beginners, although they’re great for that too. A starter kit includes materials to make a project along with all the necessary tooling. If you want to make multiples of something, for example bottle stoppers, the starter kit includes the appropriate mandrel which can be used again and again. Gift boxes and tooling bundles include useful items that you’ll continue to use in the future. For example, the acrylic starter kit includes reusable micromesh sheets and a full-sized bottle of hut polish, while the full-sized gift boxes include bushings for various projects. In addition, we have tooling bundles of multiple drill bits, pen mills, mandrels and more. Tooling and accessories can make up a good chunk of material costs, so before buying them separately, check our bundle options!

3. Tiered and wholesale pricing for pen turning supplies

If you’re looking to buy ten or more of a pen or project kit, you’re in luck. We offer tiered pricing on a wide range of our kits and pen blanks. The first tier is 10 kits, then 25 and then 50, with the price per item lowering at each level. This special pricing applies to select pen and project kits and pen blanks in acrylic, glitter, poly and fusion/hybrid. If you’re interested in becoming a wholesale customer, please contact us for more info! We may be able to work together.

4. Reduced or free shipping options for Canadian woodturners

As a small Canadian business, we completely understand how challenging shipping costs can be. That’s why we offer flat-rate shipping within Canada. Shipping on orders under $100.00 is always $12.99 (no matter how big and heavy the box is!). Orders of $100.00 and more ship for $4.99 and orders over $200.00 ship for free.

5. Helping you DIY pen and project blanks

Woodturners are hands-on, and many enjoy DIY-ing their way through a project from start to finish. That’s why offer the same raw materials to our customers that we use in-house for our specialty pen and project blanks. For stabilizing, we carry Cactus Juice, dye and vacuum chambers. For those who want to try casting resin, we have Alumilite (a brand we swear by), pressure pots and mica powder. We also have various sizes of pen tubes you can cut to size on your own the way you like them.
