This means, we are <strong>not turning all the way down to the bushings yet, <\/strong>but simply removing excess material and making the blank the same diameter down its length.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:40% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.penblanks.ca\/pen-master-accu-cut-chisel-round-finisher\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pen Master ACCU-CUT Chisel<\/a> equipped with a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.penblanks.ca\/11.9-mm-round-carbide-cutter-for-pen-master-accu-cut-round-chisel\/\" target=\"_blank\">11.9mm Round Carbide Cutter<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Now is the time to bring out our callipers, making sure to frequently check the diameter of our pen blanks to prevent over-turning. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>We recommend turning just until your blanks are rounded out, as demonstrated in the photo on the left, so as not to remove too much material.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Step 3: Turn Lower Barrel<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">After rounding each of our barrels a bit, we can turn our lower barrel, the one with the longer brass tube, down to the bushings as they are assembled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div underline;\">Step 4: Turn Upper Barrel to Diameter<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">The next step in turning the Budget Round Top European Pen is turning our upper barrel down to a <strong>diameter of 13.08mm<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 40%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Why 13.08mm, you may be asking? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong>13.08mm is the outside diameter (OD) of the centre band<\/strong>, which will slide over the tenon and sit flush with the turned barrel once your pen is turned and assembled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Getting as close to this measurement as possible will enable your finished pen to be assembled correctly and ensure the components fit together perfectly.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"636\" height=\"392\" underline;\">Step 5: Turn Finial End of Upper Barrel to Bushing<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">The next thing we need to do is turn the finial end of the upper barrel down to the diameter of the finial bushing, <strong>but only on this underline;\">Step 6: Mark Length of Tenon<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Before we can actually turn a tenon in our pen blank, we need to mark with a pencil exactly where we want our tenant to end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">We will do this using the centreband as a guide.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:40% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Once the final pen is assembled, the centreband will slide over our tenon and sit flush against the turned barrel, meaning that making the tenon too short or too long will interfere with the final assembly of our pen kit.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Step 7: Turning The Tenon<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Now, time for the tenon!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">For this particular technique, we prefer to use the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penblanks.ca\/pen-master-accu-cut-chisel-square-rougher\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Pen Master ACCU CUT Chisel equipped with a 10.5mm Square Carbide Cutter<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 40%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">The diameter of your tenon should be turned to <strong>no smaller than 10.25mm<\/strong>, or the outer diameter (OD) of the bushing closest to the tenon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">When turning your tenon, be sure to note whether you measured the length of your tenon from the inner or outer edge of your pencil mark and turn accordingly, because the pencil mark itself adds a few millimeters onto your tenon length if measured inaccurately.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">To test whether or not you\u2019ve turned your tenon down enough, simply unlock your tailstock, remove the end bushing, lower barrel and middle bushing from your mandrel, and slide the centreband included with your Budget Round Top European Pen Kit onto your tenon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">If it doesn\u2019t go on completely &#8211; you need to remove more material. The centreband should fit snuggly on your tenon, and should be flush with the OD of the upper barrel<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Don\u2019t worry if it is a tad loose-fitting, as we will be securing the centreband onto the tenon permanently using CA Glue.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Step 8: Sanding and Finishing<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" to sand our blanks using first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penblanks.ca\/Abranet-mesh-sheets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Abranet Mesh<\/a> followed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penblanks.ca\/Micro-Mesh-Sheets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Micro Mesh Sheets<\/a> and apply a finish.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 40%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">After sanding our blanks with <strong>120 through 600<\/strong> grit Abranet Mesh Sheets and <strong>1500 through 120000<\/strong> grit Micro Mesh Sheets, we chose to apply <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penblanks.ca\/EEE-Ultra-Shine-polish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EEE Ultrashine Polish<\/a> to provide our pen with a natural shine and damage\/liquid protection.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"694\" height=\"360\" underline;\">Step 9: Assembly!<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">The trickiest part of assembling the Budget Round Top European Pen Kit is securing the centreband on the tenon. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">We chose to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penblanks.ca\/starbond-ca-glue-medium-16-oz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Starbond Medium CA Glue<\/a> for this step, but we recommend using a two-part epoxy (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.penblanks.ca\/c-tough-two-part-epoxy-4.25-oz-125-ml\/\" target=\"_blank\">C-Tough Two-Part Epoxy<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.penblanks.ca\/c-poxy-15-minute-two-part-epoxy-4.25-oz-125-ml\/\" target=\"_blank\">C-POXY 15-Minute Two-Part Epoxy<\/a> are great choices) if you feel that you need more working time than CA Glue provides. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:40% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"694\" height=\"359\" src=\"https:\/\/penblanks.ca\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/Screen_Shot_2023-06-27_at_3.46.29_PM-removebg-preview.png\" class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Simply apply a <strong>very small amount<\/strong> of CA Glue or Epoxy around the tenon, making sure to cover the entire surface of the tenon with a <strong>thin<\/strong> layer before sliding the centreband into place. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Once the centreband is securely attached to the upper barrel, it&#8217;s time to assemble the rest of our pen! The final steps in assembling the Budget Round Top European Pen Kit are as follows (as outlined in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penblanks.ca\/instructions\/english\/BudgetRoundTopEuro7mm.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Budget Round Top European Pen Kit Instructions<\/a>):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Unscrew the brass finial bushing from the finial. Press it into the other end of the short&nbsp;blank.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attach the clip to this end by threading the finial stud through the hole in the clip and&nbsp;into the bushing.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Press the nib into the small end of the long barrel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Press the transmission into the other end&nbsp;until about 20.6 mm remain exposed. It is best to \u201csneak\u201d up on this, trying the refill in the mechanism until the appropriate amount, about 3 mm, of the tip is showing when the transmission is twisted and when the tip is&nbsp;fully covered when the transmission is closed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Install the refill.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Slide the cap over the transmission aligning the grain or pattern as desired.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">And Voil\u00e0!
